May is a special time of year in the realm of Ayurveda. The energy of the earth around us is clearing and blooming. We can utilize this momentum that already exists to boost our health and well being. It's like catching a wave while surfing, it can propel us forward with grace and confidence into the summer. Or the wave can pass by as it gently rocks us creating a subtle or no movement forward.
May is the month for a liver cleanse because it lifts the heaviness of the spring season dominated by kapha. Where most experience illness, allergies, and water retention are experienced. With a pitta session approaching the body and environment are ready to release this heaviness of kapha and the liver naturally wants to cleanse itself. The liver is the seed of pitta dosha. It transforms, digests, neutralizes and metabolizes whatever is in the blood stream including nutrients, hormones, emotions, and ama. The kidneys are also closely related to the blood as they filter the plasma portion of the blood and maintain electrolyte balance, fluid balance, and the energy balance through the adrenals. Healthy blood means the work load of the liver is less and the kindness can relax to create stable, sustainable energy into the pitta season.
When blood is impure, ama and kapha are not fully removed problems in the liver occur and symptoms such as tiredness, fat storage, feeling heavy after meal, inability to digest, feeling sick after eating, acne, head aches, clogged arteries, swollen ankles, random itchiness, tightness on the right side of the body, slow healing wounds, depression. When the liver isn’t working right the kidneys over work causing further issues like water retention, urination issues and high blood pressure. Honoring the liver and creating seasonal rituals such as this can help you experience health in this lifetime.
